MEET THE ARTIST

Deb G. Shannan

I have always been a keen observer of nature combining my passions of gardening, photography, and science. I pay attention to the details that define a species, a geographic location and things that indicate a change in seasons.  My photography lies at the intersection of art and science.  I strive to bring intimate views of nature emphasizing the textures, shapes and patterns found within.  My images are small by design, providing the viewer with a chance to slow down and reflect upon the quietude of nature.

ABOUT THE WORK

Behind the work

My prints and artist books are intimate portraits of the textures, patterns, and shapes found in nature. I have always been captivated by the hands-on approach that historic alternative photographic processes provide for my work. These slow processes yield unique and frequently unpredictable results. I often use botanical toners on the final prints which impart delicate and nuanced color changes. More recently, I have been bringing together collections of old prints and remaking them into artist books. Piecing together fragments of old and new. Artist books allow the viewer to interact with the images in an even more intimate way, turning the pages or opening flaps to reveal the next layer of the story. Each book shows the artist’s hand and provides a compelling voice for nature’s architecture.
